"Concealed Handgun Permit". According to Louisiana state legislature, one may only receive a concealed handgun permit once they go through the process of qualified professional instruction, application through the Louisiana State Police, background check, and acceptance. No other firearm types may be concealed. "Concealed carry weapon", or CCW, implies other types of weapons may be carried in concealment which is why the state is specific in only mentioning handguns and why I will not use the term CCW and CHP interchangeably in my class.
Yes, Louisiana law requires a permit applicant to have taken a Louisiana State Police-approved concealed handgun course within one year of application.
I use this deposit to buy you materials for class, refreshments, payment to the building owner (not me) for use of the room, and to secure space for a private range. I prepare each class approximately three weeks in advance because some materials take 10 business days to ship.
Absolutely not. I can provide a handgun for you in class and you can rent one for range qualification for $15.00 (this includes the gun and ammunition). Many pistols that are bought in a rush tend not to be the best handgun for you. Do proper research on which pistol you should buy and go to a gun shop/show. Talk to the gun store clerk/show booth operator and ask their opinions. Be wary of salespersons advertising guns that are "made for women/small or arthritic hands/pocket carry". They may be trying to get rid of overstocked pistols which may not be the best pistol for you. A viable concealed handgun should be:
Comfortable to hold
Have a little bit of weight to it (very small guns often have poor sights, low capacity, and a large recoil impulse, or "kick")
Have simple to acquire sights
Be in a caliber that is easy to find and affordable (.380 and 9mm are the most common calibers for concealed handguns)
Have holster support (many guns are returned/resold because the owner could not find a good, comfortable holster)
Able to be concealed (there's no point in concealing a S&W .500 if you can't walk or sit properly)
Your handgun.
Your handgun magazine (the part that contains the ammunition, often incorrectly referred to as the "clip"). If you bring a revolver, you do not need spare cylinders.
Your handgun owners manual.
Your holster (if you have one).
100 rounds of ammunition labeled "Full-Metal Jacket", "FMJ", or "Ball" for range qualification. This will be left in your vehicle during class as there is no live ammunition in the classroom. No reloaded ammunition on the range.
Absolutely not! TMD courses are just as friendly for those brand-new to handguns as it is for seasoned shooters.
Due to insurance liability, I do not allow reloaded ammunition during the range qualification. Only factory ammunition is allowed.
Those taking the class are not required to get their CHP afterwards. The primary goal of this class is to instruct those new to handguns the skills, knowledge, and attitude necessary to safely and legally carry. The class teaches common nomenclature, shooting skills, law interpretation, equipment maintenance, handgun safety, and many other things all gun owners should know before carrying concealed.
